Shimane
Shimane Prefecture is an elongated prefecture extending along the central Japan Sea coast of Honshu, comprising three regions: Izumo, Iwami, and Oki. Izumo houses the mythological stage Izumo Taisha Shrine, especially famous for Kamiarizuki (month when gods gather), when deities from across the nation convene. The prefectural capital Matsue City is a water city featuring National Treasure Matsue Castle and beautiful Lake Shinji sunsets, preserving streets associated with Lafcadio Hearn. Western Iwami contains World Heritage Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and Edo-period Yunotsu Onsen hot springs, where night Kagura performances are inherited. The Oki Islands are a UNESCO Global Geopark offering dynamic coastal landscapes and unique culture. Mountain and sea bounty including clams, nodoguro fish, and Izumo soba are abundant, with hot springs bubbling in every municipality. Though rail networks are limited, airports and expressway networks are well-established, allowing leisurely touring.
