Hiroshima
Hiroshima Prefecture is located in the south-central part of the Chugoku region, embraced by the calm Seto Inland Sea and the Chugoku Mountains in a naturally rich environment. The prefectural capital, Hiroshima City, has the largest population in the Chugoku-Shikoku region and, as the first city in the world to suffer atomic bombing, continues to broadcast prayers for peace globally. The southern area features the beautiful Itsukushima Shrine with its tidal sea shrine that changes appearance with the tides, the eastern area has Onomichi, a town of slopes and temples, and Kure, where shipbuilding and naval history thrive, among other distinctive cities. The prefecture is abundant with gourmet offerings such as okonomiyaki, Hiroshima oysters, and Setouchi lemons, and hosts diverse festivals and sporting events throughout the year. Access is facilitated by the Sanyo Shinkansen and Hiroshima Airport, with increasing numbers of travelers from both domestic and international destinations.
