Kumamoto
Kumamoto Prefecture is located in central Kyushu, characterized by dramatic topography including the massive Aso caldera and the Amakusa Islands. The prefectural capital, Kumamoto City, is a globally rare metropolis with 100% groundwater supply. Kumamoto Castle, built by Kato Kiyomasa, towers at the city center. Western Amakusa features rich seafood and hidden Christian heritage, southern Hitoyoshi is home to Kuma shochu, and northern Yamaga is famous for lantern dances. Each region has distinct characteristics. Famous local specialties include horse sashimi, karashi renkon, and dekopon citrus. PR activities featuring Kumamon have attracted international attention. With improved access via the Kyushu Shinkansen, the prefecture has become increasingly popular as a destination offering hot springs, outdoor activities, and historical cultural experiences all in one place.
